Dog friendly shampoos for your double coated dog

Best Dog Shampoos

Dogs are hardy animals, so shouldn’t they be able to use shampoos and conditioners that we use as humans? ‘No’ is the only answer. A double coated dogs’ skin has an alkaline pH level of up to 7.5 whereas human shampoos and conditioners have an acidic pH level between 5.2 and 6.2 making dogs’ skin much more sensitive than their human counterpart.

Should I use dog friendly shampoo AND conditioner? There are two sides to this debate, but due to the unique double coat consisting of thick furry undercoat and top ‘guard hairs’, I  would say ‘No’ – it’s not necessary. The mix of both tends to repel dirt and grime quite well, and I find by using a shampoo which can help strengthen their coat is all you need.

It is also essential not to over wash your double coated dog. Because their coats repel dirt and other debris, double coated dogs often don’t need to be washed as often as single coated dogs – usually between two to three months is fine depending how often the dog is outside and prone to the elements. Too much washing can cause their skin and hair to lose their natural oils becoming dry, broken, and brittle, as well as cause irritation and scratching. So if you prefer to wash your dog at home rather than take him or her to a dog groomer, here are my top two recommended products.

BIO-Groom Extra Body Shampoo for Double Coated Dog Breeds

Bio-Groom Extra Body Shampoo

Especially formulated for double coated dogs using natural ingredients such as Coconut Oil and Soy Protein, this shampoo is free from parabens and artificial thickeners which produce thick foamy residue, making it easier and quicker to rinse off. It is also safe to use on puppies as it is soap-free. It is also safe to use with topical flea and tick treatments.

4-Legger Organic, Hypo-Allergenic, Lemongrass & Aloe Dog Shampoo

4-Legger Organic, Hypo-Allergenic, Lemongrass & Aloe Dog Shampoo

All natural and certified organic, this non-toxic, biodegradable shampoo won’t strip the natural oils of your dogs’ skin and coat. In fact, it works well on dogs with allergies and dry, itchy skin. It won’t remove your topical flea treatments already in place, and comes in a concentrated formula, so make sure you only use a small amount to lather and rinse out easily.

It’s worth noting a great product I found below that really helps when it comes to washing my boy. He doesn’t mind it at all, so I thought I’d share with you as it is related to doggie bath time.

Wondurdog Quality at Home Dog Wash Kit for Shower

Easy to use, this water brush features longer rubber teeth in the centre, and smaller rubber teeth around the outer rim to provide a deep clean and soothe your dog as it brushes and bathes at the same time. It has an eight foot hose (just under two and a half metres) and features a splash shield to help keep you less wet.

In conclusion, there are an abundance of dog shampoo products on the market. But finding the right one for your double coated dog is a personal and practical choice. My recommendations are based on trial and error and I really only have two I can recommend from those I have tried. Enjoy bath time with your best friend.
